Byres / Byers / Byars - Surname Genealogy Project

Byres Surname

The Byres surname has not been proven to originate in any one single location or from one individual person. Earliest official records and documents appear to point to the possibility of Norman origin in European France, with a preponderance of very early recording of this surname in Scotland. This is where this study will start and evolve from ...

One of the major sources of genealogical data for the BYRES surname in Scotland, is that of an 1885 publication titled - The Family of Moir and Byres - which is surprisingly accurate in its family structure information and dates, most of which have been either verified or supplemented from the General Registry of Scotland (GROS) - Scotlands People - site of births, marriages, deaths, census, wills and valuation rolls.

The basic family tree from this publication has been reconstructed and can be found starting at the earliest known ancestor - John Byres I of Coates (c1569-c1629)

Byers Surname

In English Local Surnames, some common place name elements are weakened when final and unstressed and were re-spelled in a way which often disguises their origin; these weakened forms were then often confused and incorrect forms substituted. For instance, house is frequently weakened to: as, -es, is, us, ars, ers, urs, etc.

For instance: Barkhouse (tannery) - Barkas, Barkis; Broadhouse - Broadis; Brookhouse - Brokus; Byhouse - Byus, Byars, Byers.

The corruption of the spelling of the surname in records has created stumbling blocks to most researchers. If a person could not spell their given name, those who were taking census, tax lists, etc., spelled the name as they heard it.

Thus, in searching for our ancestors with the name BYERS, we must broaden our search to include the variant spellings - Bias, Byas, Byus, Byous, Bious, Byhus, Bius, Bice, Byls, Beous, Byars, and others.
